Field Trips

We plan a field trip activity for you which is a visit to a site in Egypt that is characterized by a well-defined human activity, such as a trade, industry or social service. Such activity reflects a vivid picture of specific Egyptian cultural and social characteristics associated with that site and the community to which it relates directly or indirectly.

We select the site for the opportunities that it offers to you in order to communicate with people using Arabic. You will be using Arabic to find out about people in the site and what they do.That gives you the opportunity to recognize the local Arabic culture in a lively and interactive context and allows for the use of Arabic language to collect information from variety of sources, both written and oral as well as through direct interaction with the Arabic native speakers in the location.

The field trip activity is integrated in the study program where you do a series of language orientation activities in class with your Arabic teacher in preparation for the trip. You also participate in post-visit reflection activities in order to maximize the language and culture learning benefits of the activities and invest on what you have learnt and experienced during the trip. The result is a fruitful and enjoyable language and culture learning experience.

Singing Classes
You don’t need to have the most beautiful voice to join these classes. Just come with an ear that loves music and with a heart and mind that’s open to the Arabic culture. You will be practicing the lyrics and the melody of one of the Arabic songs with your teacher. Through the process you will improve your pronunciation and you will pick up some useful Arabic phrases. The meaning of the words, the feel of the music and the body language altogether will teach you about the Arabic culture better than reading hundreds of pages about it in your language. At the end of the course you and your colleagues will be performing a couple of songs that you have rehearsed in singing performance to all students in the school.

Egyptian Cooking Classes
Culture is everywhere including what we eat and how we like to eat it. Work with your colleagues to prepare some delicious Egyptian dishes using our kitchen and getting help from your teacher. You will be using Arabic throughout the activity learning words for food and food processing. When you finish you will share what you cocked with the rest of students in the school and get feedback. After the meal we all get together to play some fun language games.

Drama Club
Get ready for giving the best Arabic show. Supervised and supported by your IH Cairo teacher, you and other students of Arabic will be in charge of selecting/compiling the sketch, customs, music and art direction of the whole show. Staff and students will enjoy watching your performance in the last day of the course.
Movie Show
Don’t panic, you don’t have to produce a move. We are inviting you to watch with other students an Arabic movie. One of our IH Cairo teachers will be there to introduce the movie and run a discussion about at after watching.

Book Club
Writing a book in Arabic? Not really, we’re planning to help you read an Arabic book. Your IH Cairo teacher will help you with some titles to select from. Every week during the Book Club activity you will get together with other members of the club to exchange and discuss what you have read. One of our IH Cairo teachers will be there to provide language support.
