Egyptian Colloquial Arabic (ECA) Program- 2 and 4 Weeks Course

Course Structure

Program Objectives

As the dialect is the spoken version of Arabic, The Egyptian Colloquial Arabic (ECA) program in IH Cairo focuses on developing the oral language skills: speaking and listening. The aim is to enable learners to interact with native speakers in social and professional contexts and to demonstrate understanding of the surrounding culture. The Egyptian Colloquial Arabic (ECA) study levels are based on to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Program Structure

The program covers level bands from beginners level A1 to advanced level C1 of the CEFR scale. The five bands A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1 are covered in 12 course levels; each level is covered in 40 hours of intensive study over one month.

Materials

The Egyptian Colloquial Arabic (ECA) courses use the “Kallimni Arabi” book series. Each course uses the relevant part of the series with its audio recordings relevant to the given level. Each course is supplemented by a selection of authentic materials from different resources in the internet for listening and discussion activities.

Methods of teaching:

IH Cairo adopts a student-centered instructional model and a communicative approach where teachers facilitate the language learning through short presentations of the new content in appropriate social and cultural contexts and allocate more time for language items and language skills practice. The classroom activities allow for maximum student participation and aim at developing oral language skills; speaking and listening through communicative activities.

The classroom could be seen as a small learning community and students are encouraged to work in pairs and small groups in class in order to maximize the opportunities for language practice and peers’ support with the teacher’s help and feedback.Assignments are integral part of each course and they aim at enforcing what has been taught in class as well as creating opportunities for interaction with native speakers outside the classroom.
